Mono Lake, Califormia

One of America's Oldest Lakes

At two and a half times as salty as the ocean and 80 times as alkaline (pH 10!), Mono (pronounced Moh-no) Lake is an oasis in the dry Great Basin and a vital habitat for millions of migratory and nesting birds. The Tufa towers are formed from the super mineral-rich water mixing with natural fresh-water springs bubbling up under the lake bed.

Mono Lake is situated on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, near the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park.
